New for June 2019

For the month of June and the start of the summer season, I have selected three new images from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection of the much-loved biblical figure who makes us to "lie down in green pastures." The Good Shepherd is a favorite subject of artists around the world, depicted in a variety of ways in many different materials, as we can see in these artworks. One of the new pieces, now on view in The Good Shepherd page in the Themes of Faith section, is an accurate reproduction of an iconic painting on this theme by the late 19th Century German Artist Bernhard Plockhurst, cut from a red sheet of paper by an unknown Chinese artisan. An anonymous textile-artist from the Kuna People of the San Blas Archipelago in Panama has also been hard at work with scissors, creating an image of the Good Shepherd with a sheep on his shoulders in a reverse applique, stitched cloth piece (above, left), designed to be worn as a decorative panel on a blouse. Our third artist, Greek Icon-maker Eri Fragiadaki, shows a similar image of the Good Shepherd, painted in egg tempera on a fragment of olive wood, suggesting a piece from antiquity found in an archaeological dig.
