New for September 2019

September is the time of year to turn our attention to the heavenly hosts as we celebrate the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels. My latest on-line art offerings from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection are three book plates with angels by Russian-Ukrainian Artist Konstantin Kalynovych, a post-modern master at creating enigmatic images of heavenly emissaries on mysterious divine missions. In one of the artist's trademark "winter dreams" scenes, an angel catches the breeze in a heavenly boat come to rescue a landlocked sailing ship. In a second snowscape, a leafy tree, the Eye of Providence, and an angel in flight appear on what might be three floating fragments from a crumbling manuscript, signaling a change of seasons. In the most cryptic of the three book plates, Moment of Life (above left), an aging angel in a boat formed from a human profile goes nose to beak with a bird, another familiar image in Kalynovych's visual repetoire. These three new etchings join six other Kalynovych depictions of the hosts of heaven in the From Realms of Glory gallery in the Themes of Faith section, earning him the distinction of being the most angelic-minded artist in the Collection.
