New for March 2020

As we enter the second month of Lent, I have selected a trio of works by Italian and French artists in a modernist style depicting the Deposition of Christ from the Cross, now of view in the Were You There When They Crucified My Lord gallery in the Themes of Faith section. In a mixed media drawing from Maurice Morel, a French artist-priest best known for his abstract compositions, the extended body of Christ slides down a triangular sheet in a composition dominated by horizontal, vertical, and slashing diagonal lines. In contrast, the lithograph from Italian Print-maker Isa Pizzoni of the dead Christ in the arms of the three Marys at Golgotha is a fluid arrangement of emotionally evocative curving lines. My third art offerning (left) from Bernard Damiano, an Italian-born artist who lived in France, turns the events of Calvary into a volcanic explosion of oozing paint, where wildly writhing forms gather around the body of Jesus beneath the monolithic form of the Cross.
