New for July and August 2020

My selection of artworks from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection for July and August illustrate moments in the Gospel when Jesus deals one on one with people, attentive to their specific needs, whether they are alone together, in intimage groupings, or in crowds. The four poster-format reproductions now on view in the Encounters with Christ gallery of The Life of Christ section are the work of Elsie Anna Wood, the noted British Bible illustrator, featured in our April entry, who created a series of paintings of the life of Christ for Sunday school materials published in the 1950s by the London-based Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK).  In her depictions of the conversations Jesus had with the Samaritan woman at the well; Zacchaeus, the man in the tree; Nicodemus, the man who came by night; and Mary and Martha, the two sisters of Bethany (above); Wood displays an insider's knowledge of Holy Land locales from urban rooftop vistas to rugged mountain landscapes, gleaned when she worked in the Middle East for missionary agencies.
