In times like the present global pandemic, people think apocalyptic thoughts about the End of the World and a Day of Reckoning for humankind. My selection of artworks from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection for September offer four different interpretations of the Last Judgment narrative in Matthew 25:31-46, where Christ uses the image of the separation of sheep from goats to foretell what is in store for those who fail in this life to respond to the needs of others by offering them drink, food, shelter and dress; nursing the sick; and visiting the imprisoned--acts of mercy we do for him, when we do them for our brothers and sisters. Three new images can be found in The Last Judgement page of the Until the End of Time gallery of The Life of Christ section. American Folk Artist Carl Dixon shows Christ descending with angels from heaven to judge the earth, where the faithful carry on the good works listed in the Gospel narrative. The prisoner is Martin Luther King in his Birmingham jail cell. Ukrainian Greek Catholic Artist Ulyana Tomkevych gives us an iconographic rendering of the Gospel story (above left), where Christ sits in judgment of a representative sampling of humanity painted in red tones with blue side panels depicting the acts of mercy. Canadian Cartoonist David Hayward, known as the Naked Pastor, shows a neglected, caged Christ at the entrance of heaven, reminding would-be arrivals of what they failed to do in life. There is a meditation on a fourth artwork on the theme by London-born Irish Artist Brian Whelan in the Art Reflections gallery of the Moments with Masters section. (John Kohan)
