New for October and November 2020

During the months of October and November, I'm showcasing three new images from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection of John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, who paid John the highest of tributes, when he said that "among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet (Luke 7:28, KJV)." We refer nowadays to prophets as people who "speak truth to power," and John certainly fits this description with his call to the religious establishment and the immoral ruler, Herod Antipas, to repent.  John was identified with biblical prophecies of a "voice crying in the wilderness," who would prepare the way for the coming of the Lord, a theme represented in an abstract, new media print from Czech Graphic Artist David Wojkowicz. Ukrainian Painter Danylo Movchan suggests both the spiritual austerity and purity of purpose of the Baptizer in his icon of John draped in camel skins. Lyuba Yatskiv, another Iconographer from West Ukraine, presents John three-fold (above), preaching repentence, baptizing Christ, and holding his head on a platter in token of the manner of his death. The trio of images can be found on The Baptism of Christ page in the The Coming of Christ gallery of The Life of Christ section, where I have expanded the biblical texts with a more complete reference to the Baptizer. You can also find a meditation on American Artist Wayne Forte's drawing, A Modern Day Prophet (Micah 6:8), in the Art Reflections gallery of the Moments With Masters section. If ever we needed a John the Baptist to cry out in the wilderness, it is certainly now! (John Kohan)
