New for February 2021

Ash Wednesday falls on February 17th this year. For this first month in the season of Lent, I've selected a quartet of images from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection by international artists in a variety of mediums, illustrating the Gospel narrative of Christ praying in Gethsemane. This genre of art about Christ's Passion is commonly known as "The Agony in the Garden," where we see Jesus, in all his humanity, struggling in prayer to accept his coming death by Crucifixion. Swedish Painter Gosta Nordblad invites us to eavesdrop on the scene in the Garden, where our view of Christ is tantalizingly blocked by the sleeping disciples and a large tree trunk.  In a new media digital print from Korean-American Artist Sunhee Joo, we glimpse Jesus from behind above the disciples at rest like the crowning rock formation of a distant hill. American Printmaker Lydia N. Breed (Left) brings together the events at Gethsemane and Golgotha in a richly detailed woodcut where the kneeling Christ in the Garden merges with an image where his arms are spread wide on the Cross. Romanian Folk Artist Adriana Vasile shows Jesus accepting the divine will in a traditional reversed glass painting, where the artist has completed the finishing touches first with the background area painted last. The four new Gethsemane artworks can be viewed in The Prayer in the Garden page of The Passion of Christ gallery of The Life of Christ section. (John Kohan)
