New for March 2021

As we enter the second month of Lent, I have selected an artwork for March from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection made up of 15 separate paintings. It is a Stations of the Cross mixed media carved wood piece from the Mississippi-based visionary folk artist, Carl Dixon, presenting fourteen of the traditional events occurring on Christ's journey along the Way of Sorrow from his trial before Pontius Pilate to his burial in the garden tomb and an extra fifteenth scene of the Resurrection--all on a single panel. Dixon has done a masterful job organizing the devotional story cycle into three rows with four vignettes each and a fourth row of two images plus an extended two-section box of Christ nailed to the Cross. He preserves a visual continuity among the separate story blocks by rendering the Cross, whenever it appears in the narrative, in the same tilted configuration rising from left to right. This Dixon Passion panel can be found in the Introduction to The Stations of the Cross gallery of the Themes of Faith section. (John Kohan)
