New for August 2021

For the next two months, I will be featuring the woodblock prints of Czech Graphic Artist Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova.  Largely unknown outside her homeland, she was a pioneer of wordless books, creating 15 illustrated narratives between 1929 and 1969, ranging from childhood memoirs to a retelling of the Life of Christ. Published in 1944,  Christ: 32 woodcuts from the New Testament presents one image for each of the traditional number of years in the life of Jesus, beginning with the Annunciation and ending with his Ascension. Bochorakova-Dittrichova illustrates the biblical narratives with an economy of visual means, reducing line-making to an expressive minimum, where white highlights define the compositions against broad areas of black. We begin this month with 13 pages from Christ: 32 woodcuts from the New Testament, taking us from the appearance of the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary to the raising of Lazarus from the dead. They can be found in The Coming of Christ, The Ministry of Christ, and The Miracles of Christ galleries of The Life of Christ section. (John Kohan)
