New for December 2021-January 2022

As 2021 draws to a close and we enter the New Year, marking the Advent Season, Christmas, and the Feast of the Epiphany, I have four new pieces from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection with holiday themes to bring on-line, created by Ukrainian Greek Catholic artists from West Ukraine. This latest group of icons from the city of Lviv combine the conventions of this ancient sacred art form and traditional folk art motifs with contemporary approaches to composition and color palette. Khrystyna Yatsyniak presents the Madonna and Child as a study in greys in a cubist composition, while Kost Markovych tints his neo-Byzantine depiction of the Adoration of the Magi in an ethereal shade of blue. Ulyana Nyshchuk and Oksana Romaniv-Triska (above, left) offer us folk-art-inspired Nativity scenes with modernist touches, painted on a crafted wood panel and pane of glass. These seasonal images from Ukraine can be found on the pages of The Coming of Christ gallery in The Life of Christ section.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! (John Kohan)
