New for May

May is the time of year to honor the Virgin Mary, and what better place to find Marian imagery than in Poland, where Roman Catholics are fervent in their devotion to the Mother of Christ. I have added four new images this month to The Magnificat page in The Coming of Christ gallery of The Life of Christ section from Polish artists working in a variety of styles and mediums. Jan Gieldon, a folk artist from the Gdansk region, gives us a charming glimpse in watercolor of a haloed Mary and Jesus beside a single rose on a desk. Stanislaw Koguciuk, a naive painter from a village near the Ukrainian border, enthrones the Madonna and Child amid blossom-bearing angels on a painted wood panel framed in red, yellow and blue flowers. In a similarly rustic scene, the Blessed Mother and Jesus gather flowers and grains in a painted wood carving by Andrzej Wojtczak, a sculptor from the Kutno school of woodworking in Central Poland. Graphic Designer Ryszard Kaja gives us a modern, minimalist image of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa glowing against the night sky in a travel poster (left) for Jasna Gorna, the "Bright Mountain" Monastery where the country's most venerated icon is kept. Poland has opened its doors to almost three million Ukrainian refugees. Pray for the Peace of Ukraine! (John Kohan)
