New for Otober 2022

October is the time to celebrate the life of St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day falls on the fourth of the month. The whimsical clothier's son from medieval Umbria who turned Christendom upside down has long been a favorite subject of sacred artists. I am delighted to add four new prints to the Francis of Assisi: The Troubadour of God page in the Themes of Faith section from an incomplete series of lithographs by French Artist J. Frederic Loisel I discovered fifteen years ago hidden among the prints of more famous contemporary artists in a gallery on the Left Bank in Paris. Two of the lithographs offer a glimpse of Francis as a handsome youth-about-town singing ballads of courtly love to a his female followers and a disillusioned would-be knight in shining armor who drops out of a papal campaign against the Holy Roman emperor to purse his religious calling. A third fills a significant gap in my collection of Loisel Franciscan-themed lithographs with an image of the saint receiving the stigmata (left). A fourth shows him sharing words of wisdom with his fellow brothers in the Franciscan movement in the last years of his life. Who knows what other Loisel prints may come to light in the years to come! (John Kohan)
