New for March-April 2023

My art selection for the season of Lent this year from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection is a complete cycle of prints of the Stations of the Cross by French Graphic Artist Albert Decaris. He is considered to be the most outstanding practitioner in 20th century France of the art of engraving, where images are incised by hand directly onto a plate for printing rather than burned into the metal surface with acid, as in etchings. Decaris created this large format print suite, illustrating the traditional Roman Catholic Good Friday devotion, in 1951 for the Church of St. Peter in Besancon, a city in the French region of Franche-Comte, where the original engraved plates are exhibited. The images on display in The Stations of the Cross galleries of the Themes of Faith section are majestically baroque in their detail, as we follow Christ from the Judgment Hall of Pontius Pilate to his death on the Cross and entombment. A luminous frontispiece portrait symbolizes his Resurrection. (John Kohan)
