New for May 2023

May is the time of year to pay homage to the Virgin Mary. I have four new images of the Mother of Christ to present this month by Ukrainian Greek Catholic artists from the West Ukrainian cultural center of Lviv. Two icons of the Madonna and Child painted in a traditional way with modern styling are now on view in The Magnificat page of The Coming of Christ gallery in The Life of Christ Section. Ivan Dashko works with Marian prototypes from the 15th to 16th century, considered to be the golden age of Ukrainian iconography. Roman Vasylyk gives us a contemporary variation on the Mother of God of Sambir, a wonder-working icon revered by Ukrainian Greek Catholics, variously dated from the 12th to 16th centuries, from a city close to the Polish border. The Feasts of the Ascenscion and Pentecost are celebrated this year in May and two icons commemorating these events have been added to the Until the End of Time gallery of The Life of Christ section. The Virgin Mary, brilliantly robed in red, takes center stage among the followers of Jesus who glimpse the Ascended Christ enthroned in heaven in a strikingly colored icon (above) from Kateryna Shadrina. Mary appears again in the midst of the disciples in a fourth icon from Lviv showing the descent of Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Kateryna Kuziv symbolizes heaven come to earth with broad-brushed strokes of blue. Pray for Peace in Ukraine! (John Kohan)
