New for September-October 2023

The season for harvesting grapes in the Northern Hemisphere runs from late August through October, bringing to mind the many varied references to vineyards in the Bible. I have four new images to add to The True Vine gallery in the Themes of Faith section illustrating Christ's reference to himself in John 15:1-6 as the vine stock, supporting and nourishing the branches that are his followers. An Eastern Orthodox iconographer from the Pefkis Workshop near the famed monasteries of Meteora in northern Greece offers us a literal image in the Byzantine style (left) of Christ enthroned at the center of a grape vine with twelve apostles entwined in the branches.  An unknown French holy card maker turns the criss-crossing, diagonal strokes from the chi ro symbol with the first letters for Christ in Greek into the hardy vine stock for fruit-laden stems. Christ strikes an elongated pose among grape vines in the Art Nouveau style in a wood engraving by German Printmaker Daniel Greiner from a 1918 portfolio of illustrations of the Gospel of John. Ukrainian Greek Catholic Icon Maker Natalya Rusetska presents an ethereally abstract image of a purple-robed Christ with Communion chalice surrounded by triangular grape clusters. (John Kohan)
