For the month of November, I'm uploading a quartet of images by international printmakers from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection to The Annunciation page of The Coming of Christ gallery of The Life of Christ section, illustrating the "prequel" to the Christmas story, when the Angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary to tell her she had been chosen to be the mother of the Messiah. Mexican Artist Artemio Rodriguez has kept alive the arcane art of hand press printing with images like his linocut (left) of the Annunciation, where we see Gabriel, decked out in all the baroque finery of angels in the Spanish Colonial style, encountering a humble peasant woman. The 20th century German printmaker, Elisabeth Voigt, adds a Rococo touch to her depiction of the scene in the exaggeratedly billowing garments of Gabriel and Mary. Czech Graphic Artist Emilie Tomanova shows the light of life come into the world in her nocturnal toned etching of the Annunciation. Her compatriot, Alena Antonova, gives the divine-human encounter a modernist spin in a cubistic colored print with expressive, elongated forms. (John Kohan)
