For the season of Lent this year I'm presenting four drawings from British Artist Peter Howson, whose harrowing studies of the Crucifixion have been compared with the Isenheim Altarpiece of North European Renaissance Master Matthias Grunewald. Two mixed media sketches with chaotic linework depict the Crucifixion as a surging crowd scene and show the Beloved Disciple and the two Marys (left) catching a glimpse of Christ in his Glory above the slumped body of Jesus in an unusual double portrait. Two drawings in charcoal and pastel capture the solitude of the dying Savior, free-floating in space (right) and held fast by nails to the wood of the Cross. The four Howson images can be found on The Crucifixion page of The Passion of Christ gallery in The Life of Christ section. (John Kohan)
