For the first two months of the summer season, I'm taking up the pastoral theme of the Good Shepherd, presenting three new images of this beloved biblical subject in different variations by Ukrainian Greek Catholic artists from the new school of iconography in the West Ukrainian cultural center of Lviv. Ivan Dashko creates holy images in the style of the Golden Age of Ukrainian iconography in the 15-16th centuries, offering us the most traditional depiction of Christ with the lost lamb that was found slung over his shoulders. Kateryna Shadrina gives us a more contemporary stylization in the round, shunning the cool blue and green shading typically associated with this motif for bolder colors and gives the rescued sheep a slightly rebellious glint in the eye! In an ethereal vision in pastel coloring, Natalya Rusetska (left) represents the Good Shepherd as a spiritualized figure with his feet on the earth and his head among the angels of heaven. This trio of contemporary icons from Ukraine can be found in The Good Shepherd gallery of the Themes of Faith section. Please continue to Pray for the Peace of Ukraine! (John Kohan)
