For the Lenten season, I'm presenting the work of Polish Folk Artist Anton Kaminsky, who created six wood carvings, now in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection, depicting episodes from the Passion of Christ, beginning with his Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem and ending with the Resurrection, including statuary of the Last Supper, Christ carrying the Cross, the Crucifixion, and the Deposition. The sextet of wood carvings can be viewed in the galleries of The Life of Christ and Themes of Faith sections. Kaminski is considered to be one of the founders in the 1970s of a school of wood carving, linked to the village of Kutno in the Polish heartland, characterized by frieze-like rows of stylized heads with staring eyes and repetitive decorative patterns, often polka-dots in riotous colors.
