Sacred Art Meditations begins a new season with a tribute to the hosts of heaven in honor of the feast of St. Michael and All Angels on September 29. The angel images now on view in the From Realms of Glory gallery of the Themes of Faith section are all the work of iconmakers from a new school of Ukrainian Greek Catholic iconography centered on the West Ukrainian cultural center of Lviv and give eloquent evidence of how artists of faith in Ukraine are dealing with the horrors of war without losing hope for the future. Kateryna Shadrina suggests the guardian angels in her icon, washed in the national colors of blue and yellow, have much to preoccupy them as they look downward on her conflict-ridden homeland. Natalya Rusetka gives us a heavenly panorama of Michael the Archangel and his cosmic commandos struggling against Satan the Great Dragon for control of the earth. In a page from a visual diary Ulyana Krekhovets kept in the first months of the Russian invasion, the Archangel has actually come to earth to help the defenders of the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, a city where he is patron saint. The Collection commissioned a portrait of the warrior angel from Sviatoslav Vladyka, an iconmaker now serving with Ukraine's frontline special forces. St. Michael has the war-weary look of a longtime soldier with the traditional drooping mustache and hair lock of Ukraine's fabled Cossack freedom fighters. Pray for peace in Ukraine! (John Kohan)
