New for December

The story of Christ's birth continues to inspire sacred artists around the world. In celebration of Christmas, I have added 15 new images of the Nativity from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection by international artists in a variety of media. They can be found in the Away in a Manger and O Come All Ye Faithful pages of the Coming of Christ gallery in the Life of Christ section. American Printmaker Sister Corita Kent and American-Russian Artist Nahum Tschacbasov offer contemporary versions of the Nativity in an abstract serigraph and cubistic hard ground etching, while American Outsider Artist Miriam Capurro draws on folk art motifs for her small format acrylic painting. There are two expressionist drawings by French Modernist Artist-Priest Maurice Morel and an Art Deco Madonna and Child by French Graphic Artist Hermine David, one of many images of the Virgin Mary she made in her artistic career. East European Ex-Libris Makers Pavel Hlavaty from the Czech Republic and Antanas Kmieliauskas from Lithuania are represented by a Nativity etching and mixed media print. You can see a wood engraving of the Holy Family by French Graphic Artist Albert Decaris, better known for his copper plate prints, and two wood engravings by Austrian-American Artist Helen Siegl, used as illustrations in a Christmas Carol collection.  Printmaker Sadao Watanabe offers a Japanese view of the Christmas story in a small stencil print, while Indonesian Textile Artist A. N. Suyanto presents the scene in batik on cloth. Rounding out this international list are a leather and a parchment painting of the Nativity by unknown Ethiopian icon-makers. I have also written a commentary on American Artist Mitchell Fadief's 1946 chalk and charcoal modern manger scene for the Art Reflections gallery of the Moments with Masters section. Why not spend a few quiet moments, meditating on the meaning of Christ's birth, in these hectic weeks before Christmas? (John Kohan)
