New for January 2012

As we enter the New Year, the twelve days of Christmas continue, culminating in the Feast of the Ephiphany on January 6th, which celebrates the coming of the Magi to worship the Christ Child. I've added images of eleven new artworks from the Sacred Art Pilgrim collection, depicting the visit of the Three Kings and the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. They can be found in the We Three Kings and the Flight into Egypt pages in the Coming of Christ gallery of the Life of Christ Section. Included in these New Year art offerings is a charming scene of the Magi, traveling on horseback, by Mexican Folk Artist Lucas Lorenzo, where the usual Christmas star has been replaced by a rising sun. There are abstract studies of the Magi by French Artist Pierre Thevenin and Puerto Rican graphic artist, Javier, and three wood engravings of the Three Kings by Dutch Illustrator Willem Hardenberg and Czech Ex Libris Artists Antonin Dolezal and Vojtech Cinybulk. I've also included an ink drawing by Czech-Canadian Artist Miro Malish, showing three children, dressed as the Wisemen, taking part in traditional East European Epiphany celebrations. The Flight into Egypt appears below an image of the Nativity iin a two panel leather painting by an unknown Ethiopian icon-maker and in a linocut print by Bulgarian Graphic Artist Pencho Koulekov. German-American Artist Carl Schultheiss and Czech Printmaker Jaroslav Vodrazka show the Holy Family, resting by the side of the road, in two etchings of this popular artistic variation on the biblical narrative. To round out my end-of-the-Christmas-season art selections, you can also find a new meditation on the theme of the Incarnation in Cypriot Icon-Writer's painting, Madonna of the Woods, in the art reflections gallery of the Moments with Masters section. My best wishes to you all for a hope-filled, art-inspired 2012! (John Kohan)
