The Season of Lent begins on February 22th, so, my selection of images this month from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection is devoted to the Lord's Supper and the Eucharistic theme of Christ the True Vine. You can now view eight new images by artists from around the world in The Last Supper page of The Passion of Christ gallery in The Life of Christ section. There is an expressionist etching by French Artist Alfred Courmes of Christ, washing the feet of the outcasts of society, and a darkly grotesque etching of Christ and his disciples at the supper table by American Printmaker J. P. Erskine. A colored and a black-and-white woodcut of the Last Supper come from two members of the Borges family printmaking "dynasty" of Northeastern Brazil, Amaro Francisco Borges and Jose Miguel da Silva. Japanese Stencil Print artist Sadao Watanabes offers an intimate view of Jesus and four disciples at the Eucharistic table, while Nicaraguan Primitivista Painter Jose Ignacio Fletes Cruz sets the scene in a red tile-roofed, cinder block hut. American Visionary Artist Rudolph Valentino Bostic presents the moment of the consecration of the bread and wine in a glitter-covered mixed media piece, and an unknown Ethiopian Icon-maker depicts the scene against a warm, ochre background. You can also find a new meditation, The True Vine, in the Themes of Faith section, presenting passages from the Bible about grapes, vineyards, vines and wine, alongside images by international artists, including Henri Matisse and Jaspar Johns.
