New for May 2016

The Virgin Mary is traditionally honored in May.  I have selected six new images this month of the Mother of Christ from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection, taken from the lithographic suite, La Vie de la Vierge, by French Printmaker J. Frederic Loisel. The Virgin's radiant white face is the visual focus in each of these richly toned chiaroscuro prints, depicting key moments in her life. Mary kneels in prayer, as the Angel Gabriel descends with news of the coming of Christ in Loisel's version of the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38). She looks fixedly out at us, holding the Baby Jesus in her lap, in a Nativity scene (Luke 2:13-15). Two angels surround her (left) as the Holy Family flees to Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15). She sits at the center of the table at the wedding feast in Cana, where her son performs his first miracle (John 2:1-11). She swoons from grief into the arms of the two other Marys who have stood with her at the foot of the Cross (John 19:26). And she takes pride of place as Mother of the Church among the followers of the Risen Christ, waiting in the Upper Room for the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 1:14). These new Marian-themed prints can be found in various galleries throughout The Life of Christ section. (John A. Kohan)
