New for August 2016

My selection of images from the Sacred Art Pilgrim collection for the month of August depicts one of the most mysterious stories in the Hebrew Scriptures, the Three Guests of Abraham, recorded in Genesis 18:1-16. Abraham offers hospitality to three wayfarers who later prove to be angels. During the meal, one of the guests announces that Abraham's wife, Sarah, now past the age of child-bearing, will give birth to a son within the year. Her scornful laughter brings a divine rebuke. The voice in the narrative alternates between the Lord and the three visitors, making this passage a proof text for the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. Most artists have represented the three guests as identical triplets who seem joined at the hip, as can be seen in two vintage Bible story book illustrations. Chinese Artist He Qi and Japanese Printmaker Sadao Watanabe offer Asian variations on this classic theme. French Post-Impressionist Paul Emile Colin introduces an element of reality into the scene, while German Book Illustrator Otto Schubert shows the three guests at the table with angel wings. Two of the works come out of the East Orthodox tradition of using the three angelic visitors to depict the Trinity. Ukrainian Icon-maker Ivanka Demchuk (left) gives a modern variation of the 15th century iconographic prototype of this Trinitarian image by Russian Master Andrei Rublev, while Cypriot Artist Anna Kelogregovi renders the angelic trio in a freely impressionistic style. A new text with images on The Three Guests of Abraham can be found in the Heroes of the Bible gallery of the Bible Stories and Parables section. (John Kohan)
