New for September 2016

We honor the Hosts of Heaven at the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels on September 29. In this month devoted to our divine messengers, I am presenting five new angelic images from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection by Konstantin Kalynovych, a Russian-Ukrainian printmaker who creates a surreal visual world of supernatural mysteries, rich in signs and symbols drawn from the Great Masters of European art.  Angels are omnipresent in his highly detailed small format prints, constantly crossing the great divide between this world and the next, acting as agents of both judgment and mercy. They appear as majestic emissaries of the Apocalypse sounding the trumpet on Judgment Day and as guardians of the seasons, keeping watch as birds burst from a shell to mark the coming of Sping. They even tend roadside campfires (above) for the beasts of the fields and  lost wayfarers. In addition to viewing these new Kalynovych prints in the From Realms of Glory gallery in the Themes of Faith section, you can also read a meditation on his etching, The Great Mystificator, in the Art Reflections gallery of the Moments with Masters section.
