New for October 2016

The Western Church marks the 790th anniversary this month of the death of St. Francis of Assisi. In honor of this beloved saint, I am adding six images from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection to the Francis of Assisi: Troubadour of God gallery in the Themes of Faith section. There are two new portraits of Francis. French Artist Michel Ciry offers a fine-featured acquatint of the saint in profile, inspired by a visit to Assisi in 1964. New Mexican Artist Ellen Santistevan shows Francis holding a skull, a contemplative motif popular among the saint-makers of the American Southwest. Two images show Francis with the wolf of Gubbio. Ukrainian Graphic Artist Sergey Kirnitskiy improves on the simple depiction of saint and wolf by Mexican Folk Artist Lucas Lorenzo by showing Francis with three tamed predators from the cat family (left) in his book plate print. St. Francis in Ecstasy is the subject of artworks by French Artists Hermine David and Henri Brochet,  where beams from heaven form the wounds of Christ in the saint's flesh. (John Kohan)
