New for September 2017

September is the month to celebrate the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels. I have just added four new images from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection to the From Realms of Glory gallery of the Themes of Faith section showing these divine emissaries in their role as guardians of God's creatures and creation. French Symbolist Artist Maurice Denis designed a pleasing, pastel-toned wood engraving (left) of an angel cradling an infant to mark the birth of his son, Jean-Dominique, in August 1909, giving the heavenly child minder the features of his wife, Marthe. An unknown artisan from the El Roble workshop in La Palma, El Salvador, has created a delightful painted wooden cut out of an angel hovering protectively behind a little boy in the boldly colored, abstract style typical of this rural Central American folk art center. Swiss Surrealist Max Hunziker shows a heavenly messenger with variegated wings looming watchfully over a naked and vulnerable human charge in a 1964 UNICEF card on the theme of compassion. Czech Ex Libris Maker Herbert Kisza rounds out the quartet with an image of a nocturnal angel surveying with alarm and grief a landscape, perhaps, ravaged by war. (John Kohan)
