New for January 2018

January is the month when we celebrate the visit of the Wise Men to the Christ Child on the Feast of the Epiphany. To mark the beginning of the New Year, I'm adding three new images on this theme from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection to the We Three Kings page of The Coming of Christ gallery of The Life of Christ section. They are serigraph posters by Puerto Rican graphic artists promoting holiday events sponsored by the Community Education Division (DIVEDCO) of the Department of Education, which enlisted leading artists on the Caribbean island from 1949 until 1986 to create public art in a progressive style, influenced by New Deal art projects begun under President Franklin Roosevelt.  Three Kings predominate in sacred-themed seasonal serigraphs, since gifts are traditionally given in Puerto Rico on January 6th, El Dia des Reyes (The Day of the Kings). The regal trio worship the Light of the World in a print by Isabel Bernal, the best known Puerto Rican woman artist in DIVEDCO. In a serigraph (left) by Graphic Artist Antonio Maldonado, the well-travelled Wise Men (who always come on horseback) hasten to a contemporary manager scene where villagers bring bananas and a melon to the Holy Family. The Magi also appear as carved wood holy figures, a popular folk art genre, in a 1953 holiday poster by Master Printmaker Lorenzo Homar. (John Kohan)
