New for March 2018

As we continue on in the Season of Lent, I have two complete cycles of Stations of the Cross images to present for the month of March from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection by East European artists. Stanislaw Koguciuk, a folk art painter from the village of Plawanice, near Poland's eastern border with Ukraine, brings together all fourteen Stations of the Cross plus a scene of of the Resurrection in his oil on board painting (left), where Roman numeral Xs sometimes mistakenly replace Vs in this naif-styled image. An unknown Czech printmaker created a second series of the Stations of the Cross in small format woodcut prints in a folk art-influenced, early modernist style, most likely dating from the interwar period. The Koguciuk painting is on view on the introductory page to the Stations of the Cross gallery in the Themes of Faith section. The Czech prints can be found on the corresponding Station pages in the same meditation. (John Kohan)
